What Exactly is Dirty Sock Syndrome & How Does it Affect My Home?Have you noticed an unpleasant odor creeping through your home recently? It could be coming from your high efficiency HVAC system. Though they’re great systems that can save your thousands of dollars, high efficiency systems can sometimes suffer from one aptly-named condition -- dirty sock syndrome.

It strikes only a small percentage of heat pumps, but you’ll probably know if yours is one of them. It’s characterized by a musty, unpleasant odor that usually stems from a moisture problem. Here are some steps to take to get rid of odors:

Identify the Source of the Smell

The odors associated with dirty sock syndrome can originate from anywhere inside your HVAC system. Most often, A/C units and heat pump coils with excess condensation can generate mold and mildew. Problems may also come from dirty ducts, clogged filters or even contaminated outdoor air supply registers. You can check some parts yourself, but you'll need a qualified HVAC technician to look deep inside your ducts.

DIY Fixes for Homeowners

Until you can get professional servicing, here are a few things you can do to reduce or temporarily eliminate dirty sock odor:

  • Empty and thoroughly clean drain pans.
  • Clean dust and debris from all vents, and then wipe them down with rubbing alcohol.
  • Check and change all filters.
  • Address moisture issues near your HVAC unit.

In some cases, the addition of UV lights or fans can help prevent recurrence, but you still have to completely eliminate dirty sock syndrome to get rid of the odor.

Professional Odor-Busting Solutions

In almost all cases of dirty sock syndrome, the solution is a thorough professional cleaning. Your HVAC technician can open condenser units and completely eliminate contaminants. If necessary, a complete duct cleaning may solve moisture issues, while improving airflow within your system for greater efficiency.
