You can check some parts yourself, but you'll need a qualified HVAC technician to look deep inside your ducts.

Until you can get professional servicing, here are a few things you can do to reduce or temporarily eliminate dirty sock odor:
- Empty and thoroughly clean drain pans.
- Clean dust and debris from all vents, and then wipe them down with rubbing alcohol.
- Check and change all filters.
- Address moisture issues near your HVAC unit.
In some cases, the addition of UV lights or fans can help prevent recurrence, but you still have to completely eliminate dirty sock syndrome to get rid of the odor.
