Save Energy this Winter with a Variable-Speed FurnaceColder temperatures will be coming to the Fort Wayne area soon, which means it's almost time to start heating your home. Having your furnace run most of the time when it’s freezing outside helps keep you warm, but also leads to high heating bills. You can save money this winter while still heating your home by having a variable-speed furnace installed.

What Are Variable-Speed Furnaces?

These are furnaces that use an electronically-commutated motor (ECM), which is a type of DC motor. These motors offer better efficiency compared to the AC motors found in many traditional furnaces. They work by operating at different speeds in order to provide better control over airflow throughout your home. Instead of running continuously at the same speed as a traditional furnace does, a variable-speed furnace adjusts speeds based on how much heating is needed in your home. Factors that can affect these speeds and the amount of heated air the system circulates in your home include clogged or dirty filters and closed vents.

Benefits of Variable-Speed Furnaces

Variable-speed furnaces provide several benefits over traditional furnaces, including the following:

  • Improved efficiency: These furnaces offer more efficiency, leading to less wear and tear on the system and energy bills that are much lower during cold weather.
  • Better air quality: Variable-speed furnaces can help improve the indoor air quality in your home when they run on the fan setting. With this setting on, your air filters will trap a higher number of contaminants.
  • Less noise: These furnaces are quieter than traditional furnaces when they’re running. They build up to full speed slowly, instead of suddenly coming on at full speed as traditional furnaces do.
  • Less maintenance: Variable-speed furnaces don’t require as much maintenance as traditional furnaces, which can break down more often due to greater stress on the system during winter.
