Keeping your air conditioner clean and properly maintained is a key way to prevent mold from developing in your A/C system. The natural condensation and moisture produced by your air conditioner can turn the equipment into a breeding ground for mold growth. Mold can be hazardous, especially for people who suffer from allergies, asthma or other breathing ailments. To keep your air conditioner in top shape, be sure to schedule annual HVAC maintenance and follow these simple DIY tips. A clean air conditioning environment is your best line of defense against mold development.
Create a dust-free environment
Many people do not realize that the level of dust in the home has a direct impact on how well the air conditioner runs. Use static-cling dusters twice a week to keep the furniture dust-free. Use a vacuum with a high-quality filter. This helps prevent dust and bacteria from being drawn into the A/C ducts.
Check the drain
As your A/C runs, condensation is naturally produced. This moisture then flows through the drain pan and the drainage system. A properly-running air conditioner should never have standing water in the drain pain. If water stops draining, turn off the A/C and immediately contact an HVAC professional. Have the contractor check for leaks and clogs. Treat the drain with algaecide and antibacterial treatment.
Change your A/C filters
Once per month during the heavy cooling season, check the air conditioning filters in your home. The filter's job is to trap dust, dirt and bacteria. Change clogged and dirty filters. A dirty filter cannot do its job, increasing the chance for mold development in A/C components.
HVAC maintenance
During your annual HVAC maintenance, have your technician inspect the evaporator coils, drainage system and condensation production, along with performing regular maintenance and cleaning.
