Should I repair it or replace it?

That’s the biggest – and most important – question you’ll ever ask regarding your heating and cooling systems. And there are so many questions within the question:

  • When is equipment considered too old?
  • Will a newer system get you the energy efficiency you’re looking for to justify the cost?
  • If you repair or upgrade your system, are you just throwing good money at old, out-dated equipment?

We’d be happy to come to your home and personally assess your current situation and make thoughtful, in writing, easy to understand recommendations.

Key Considerations When Deciding Whether to Repair or Replace:
  • Your furnace, air conditioner unit or heat pump is more than 15 years old. Consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the “Energy Star” label. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 50% on heating and cooling costs.
  • Your equipment needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up. Your cooling or heating equipment is not cooling or heating as quickly and efficiently as it once did.
  • Uneven temperatures throughout your home. Some rooms being too hot or too cold may indicate a failing system or ductwork issues.
  • Your home lacks a programmable thermostat. This can lead to unnecessary energy waste, especially when no one is home.
  • Humidity problems in your home. Poor equipment operation, inadequate equipment, or leaky ductwork can cause overly dry air in winter and excess humidity in summer.
  • Unusual noises coming from your system. Noisy operation may signal problems like an undersized duct system or other issues with the furnace or air conditioner. New units have much lower sound ratings and highly efficient motors that allow for quieter operation.
Warning Signs of a Serious Issue:
  • Flame rollouts in a gas furnace. If flames extend outside the burner or combustion chamber, this is a fire hazard. It often happens due to soot buildup, corrosion, or a cracked heat exchanger. Flame sensors can shut down the unit to prevent damage, but a professional inspection is crucial for safety.
  • Humming or buzzing noises from your air conditioner. This could indicate issues such as a seized condenser fan motor, loose components, a malfunctioning circuit breaker, a failing contactor relay switch, or a frozen unit. Ignoring these sounds could lead to costly damage or even pose a safety risk.
What to Do Next:

If you notice any of these warning signs, turn off your system and call an HVAC professional immediately. Attempting DIY repairs can be dangerous due to electrical components and refrigerants. At Hartman Brothers Heating & Air Conditioning, we’re here to help ensure your home stays safe and comfortable. Contact us today for an expert evaluation of your heating and cooling system.

"As always, Hartman Bros does service RIGHT! They are prompt, courteous, professional, clean and fairly priced for all services we've ever had completed. We were introduced to them in 1998 when we first used their services and have been faithfully returning for every Heating and Air need, including the building of 2 new homes. They are stellar performers providing excellence at a time when mediocrity has been touted as the norm in our society. They go well above and beyond in all they do."

"I absolutely loved the service we received from Hartman Brothers. They gave us an appointment right away, and the technician knew what our issue was based on my husband's conversation with the scheduler. As a result, he came prepared to fix our problem. The technician was also very nice and courteous. I would recommend everyone to give them a call for all your HVAC needs. Thanks Hartman for a job well done!"

"Came home from work to find that my furnace wasn't working. Since the temperatures were extremely mild for November, I just left a message for them to call me the next day. Received a call by 7:25 am and told that the repair man would be there in approximately a half hour. He was at my house by 8:30 and he had it back running within 45 minutes. He went the extra step and made sure that there was no other possible issues before he left. I'd recommend Hartman Brothers Heating to anyone, they are courteous, reliable, knowledgeable and won't gouge you like some companies."
