Keeping indoor allergies at bay is not always easy when you're trying to figure out what's causing them. The key to controlling what triggers your allergy symptoms is identifying those allergens, and determining the steps you can take to ensure that the IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) in your Ft. Wayne area home is the best it can be.
Mold – This is one of the most common triggers of indoor allergies. Mold tends to grow its spores in damp areas of your home such as a steamy bathroom or a dark basement. Keeping these areas clean with a solution of water and 5 percent bleach mixture helps reduce allergy reactions to mold.
Cockroaches – According to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, certain proteins from the droppings of roaches can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks. Preventive measures include reducing clutter, sealing cracks around cabinets, storing food in airtight containers, and promptly cleaning up food crumbs and spills.
Pet Dander – Pet dander can contribute greatly to your indoor allergies. This allergen comes from the shedding of skin flakes from your pet. Either avoid having pets, or if it's too late for that, manage your pets to minimize close contact (for example, make your bedroom off limits).
Dust Mites – These little microscopic critters thrive in areas of your home where temperature and humidity is high. They are most commonly found in your bedding. The best way to keep these bugs away is to use allergen-proof bedding, and keep it washed at high temperatures.
Dust – This is considered the most common cause of indoor allergies. These small particulates circulate throughout the air in your home, and often contain bits and pieces of the aforementioned allergens. Keeping your HVAC system air filter changed at least once a month, cleaning your home frequently, and using HEPA air filtration will greatly reduce dust levels in your home.
