It's back-to-school time again and you know what that means - germs! Your lovable kids are bringing them home in record numbers, which increases the likelihood that someone in your household will get sick sooner or later. Luckily, fighting germs with HVAC techniques is an easy way to survive the onslaught. Here are some of our favorites:
Let the Air Escape
When your air is stale because it has no way to escape your home, any germs that have found their way inside will be stuck there. You can help prevent this by opening windows and turning on exhaust fans whenever possible.
Replace the Air Filter
A clogged air filter will allow germs to get past its defenses and re-enter your air whenever your HVAC equipment is turned on. You can stop this from happening by replacing your system's air filter whenever it's dirty, which usually takes 1-3 months.
Use UV Lights in Your Home
Ultraviolet lights have the ability to kill germs upon exposure. Handheld units are great at removing germs from a variety of surfaces, and you can protect your HVAC equipment by installing them within the system.
Purify the Air
Air purifiers are designed to remove harmful particulates from your home's air. These systems don't use a lot of energy and are highly effective in keeping you safe from back-to-school germs. Look for a purifier that is equipped with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter for maximum success.
Disinfect Your Home
An effective way to keep germs at bay is to disinfect your home. By simply using disinfectant wipes, especially in your bathrooms and kitchen, you'll severely cut down their numbers.
Wash Linens Regularly
Germs cling to a variety of linens, including sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and washcloths. Washing these items on a regular basis will help you keep the germs at bay.
