HEPA Filtration: An Easy, Thorough Way To Upgrade Your Indoor AirHEPA filtration is a simple method to substantially improve the quality of your indoor air, which affects the health and comfort of you and your loved ones on a daily basis.

What is HEPA filtration?

HEPA is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance. HEPA filters are the most effective air filters available, and they are standard in sensitive commercial manufacturing, operating rooms, and basically any environment that benefits from ultra-clean air. For an air filter to be qualified as a HEPA filter, it must meet U.S. Department of Energy standards of removing a minimum 99.97 percent of particulates from the air larger than 0.3 microns (or about 200-360 times smaller than a strand of human hair).

Is HEPA filtration necessary?

More than 90 percent of homes experience at least one serious indoor air quality issue, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, the EPA found that more than 70 percent of homes had potentially dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and benzene. A primary reason for this is that most homes don’t receive adequate ventilation. Who wants to open the windows in the middle of winter or summer? HEPA filtration provides the following benefits:

  • Removes pollution, contaminants, emissions and odors from the air, such as lead dust, cigarette smoke, sneeze molecules, viruses, mold spores, carpet fibers, pet dander and much more.
  • Protects HVAC equipment from dirt buildup, which degrades efficiency and hinders the function of important components.
  • Provides relief for loved ones who suffer from respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies.
  • Helps keep ductwork free of dirt build-up, mold and mildew, and helps prevent viruses and bacteria from being circulated throughout your home.

Before installing a HEPA filter, a heating and cooling pro should inspect your HVAC equipment for compatibility. For some systems, HEPA filters impede airflow too much for use, or modifications may be required. Your heating and cooling pro can recommend the best filtration needs of your home.
