Best Ways to Prevent Basement FloodingA flooded basement isn't just messy, it can also leave you with extensive water damage that's expensive to repair. Rather than simply hoping that water doesn't get into your basement and dealing with the resulting damage if it does occur, it's wiser to take some proactive steps that can help prevent basement flooding.

Here's what you can do:

Inspect the Gutter System

Make sure that connections are tight between sections, seal up leaks and check that each downspout is securely attached and in proper position. If draining downspouts can deposit water within three feet of the foundation, put extensions in place to route it a safe distance away. You should also ensure that the gutters are clean so debris doesn't cause a water backup or overflow.

Address Any Foundation Cracks

Look for and seal any cracks on your basement walls and the exterior foundation that can allow water infiltration. You can fix minor outdoor cracks yourself with epoxy, but use masonry sealant on the interior. If the foundation has numerous or wide cracks, they may require professional waterproofing.

Check the Sump Pump

Make sure your sump pump is fully operational by testing it, and clear out any debris from the sump pit. Unless you own a generator that can keep the pump running during a power outage, it's wise to invest in a battery backup device.

Tend to the Sewer System

Sewer backups aren't uncommon in the spring when the ground gets over-saturated by melting snow and rain. To lessen the risk of a backup into your basement, get your septic tank pumped out and have a plumber inspect your sewer line to ensure that it's clear of any obstructions.

Evaluate Foundation Grading

An insufficient grade around your foundation perimeter can result in water intrusions into the basement during heavy rains. To lessen this risk, ensure that the ground stops four inches from the foundation top, and that it slopes away from the foundation at one inch per foot.
