Spring Storm PrepSpringtime storms in the Hoosier state have the potential to cause severe property damage, physical injuries, and even deaths. You can't avoid these storms, but you can get ready for them. Here are some tips for spring storm prep that can help keep you, your home, and your family safer this year.

Put together an emergency plan

Severe storms and tornadoes can cause chaos in a community, so put together an emergency plan that your family members should follow in case of storms. Devise an evacuation plan with the quickest and safest way to get out of your home. If you have a storm shelter, make it clear when family members should go there. Establish a common location to meet after the storm in case different family members are at work, school, or elsewhere when the storm hits.

Purchase emergency supplies

Assemble a stock of fresh emergency supplies in case electrical power, water service, or other utilities are cut off by the storm. Keep a three-day supply of water (one gallon per day per person) and non-perishable food available. Put together a kit containing items such as fresh batteries, flashlights, blankets, dry clothing, wet-weather gear, and first-aid materials.

Prepare your home

Install storm doors and windows. Secure outdoor furniture to keep it from blowing around and becoming a hazard. Clean the yard and rim trees to remove any limbs that are likely to be blown down in a high wind.

Prepare yourself and your family

Keep a spare cell phone and external battery pack and keep both fully charged. Set aside at least a ten-day supply of necessary medications. Put together personal care kits containing hygiene and cleaning items such as pre-moistened washcloths, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and deodorant. Have a reasonable amount of spare cash on hand in case you can't get to an ATM or if credit/debit cards can't be used because of power outages.
