Stay Warm

Preventative maintenance before the first cold snap.

A furnace that sits idle all summer still needs attention before you ask it to run day and night. Preventative maintenance is the surest way to know it will start when the temperature drops — and that it will heat the house safely and efficiently all winter.

Hartman Brothers has been serving Fort Wayne and New Haven since 1963. On a furnace visit we inspect, clean, test, and explain what we find in plain language. If something can wait, we’ll say so. If something shouldn’t, we’ll tell you that, too.

Benefits of preventative furnace maintenance
  • Fewer no-heat emergencies. Ignitors, flame sensors, and blowers can fail quietly until the first hard freeze. A fall tune-up finds those weak points while you still have time to fix them on your schedule.
  • Lower heating bills. A dirty burner, restricted airflow, or a blower that isn’t running correctly wastes fuel. A clean, properly adjusted furnace uses less energy to keep the same temperature.
  • Safer operation. We check combustion, venting, and the heat exchanger for cracks or other issues that can allow exhaust gases into the home. That’s not a DIY inspection.
  • Longer furnace life. Heat, dust, and short-cycling wear out parts. Regular service reduces that strain and helps the furnace last the 15–20 years you paid for.
  • More consistent comfort. Even heat, fewer cold rooms, and fewer short on-and-off cycles usually come back once airflow and ignition are set correctly.
  • A clearer picture of the system you have. If the furnace is nearing the end of its life, you’ll know before it quits on a January night — and you can compare repair versus replacement without the pressure of an emergency.
What we check on a furnace visit

A typical furnace maintenance visit includes inspecting the burners and heat exchanger, testing ignition and safety controls, checking gas pressure and combustion as needed, cleaning the flame sensor, verifying blower operation and airflow, reviewing the filter and thermostat, and confirming the system vents properly. We'll explain exactly how the furnace is performing and what, if anything, needs attention.

Furnace FAQ

Common questions about furnace maintenance

How often should my furnace be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in early fall before you start using heat every day. That’s when our schedule has the most room, and it also gives us plenty of time to fix anything we find before the first cold snap.

Why does furnace maintenance matter for safety?

A furnace burns fuel and sends exhaust out of the house. Cracked heat exchangers, blocked vents, and dirty burners can interfere with that process. A professional inspection is the reliable way to confirm the system is operating safely — not just that it turns on.

What’s the difference between a one-time tune-up and a maintenance plan?

A one-time visit covers this season’s inspection. A maintenance plan includes regular furnace and air conditioner tune-ups, plus discounts on repairs and parts. Most homeowners who want both systems looked after every year find the plan simpler and more cost-effective.

Can I just change the filter myself?

Yes — and you should, on the schedule the filter manufacturer recommends. That still isn’t a substitute for a tune-up. Filters don’t inspect the heat exchanger, test safety switches, or clean the flame sensor, which is one of the most common reasons a furnace suddenly stops lighting.

Do you service all furnace brands?

Yes. We’ve worked on every major brand installed in Fort Wayne–area homes for more than 50 years. Our qualified technicians will thoroughly inspect the system you have and tell you exactly what it needs and nothing it doesn’t.

"Every thing went well, even though he had bad news that the unit needed to be replaced due to the fact that the unit was 18 years old and the refrigerant used in the day was R22 that it cant be purchased because of government regulations, now we will see what the estimate will be. The technician seems to be knowledgeable and was very professional about his work."
