Summer Vacation Preparation: HVACThere are tons of details to remember when you're getting ready to go on summer vacation, so it's all too easy to forget about the HVAC system here are home. Putting the following HVAC preparation tasks on your pre-vacation to-do list can help keep it running efficiently and reliably, and safe from harm while you're gone.

Dial Up the Thermostat Setting

To prevent energy waste while you're out of town, dial up the temperature setting on the thermostat to 80-85 degrees the day you leave. If you have a programmable thermostat, use its built-in vacation mode so it gets the house cooled back down and comfortable by the time you arrive home.

Add a Surge Protector

Fluctuations in the electrical current that enters your home can cause irreparable damage to any items equipped with a microprocessor. This can include your HVAC components, computers, televisions and cordless phones, and appliances like the microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator. Installing a whole-home surge protector is the hassle-free way to preserve these items when you're off on vacation.

Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter can restrict vital airflow through the HVAC system and strains the components. You can save energy and avert an equipment malfunction or breakdown while you're out of town by replacing the air filter the day before you head out.

Secure the Outdoor Unit

Adding some compressor security can help you avoid coming home to a unit that's been stripped of its copper tubing. There are a variety of security options to choose from, such as a locked cage, an alarm, or a security camera and/or motion-activated lighting

Schedule Preventive Maintenance

If you haven't a scheduled spring cooling system maintenance visit yet, be sure to do so before you leave on vacation. Your HVAC technician can inspect, clean and service the equipment to ensure it's in good working condition, and advise you if there are any developing issues that should be repaired before you head out.
