Pros/Cons of Tankless Water Heaters in Your HouseIf your home's storage tank water heater needs replacement, have you considered upgrading to a tankless water heater? There are both gas and electric tankless models available that can serve a single bathroom or an entire household, and they offer more pros than cons.

Advantages of Tankless Water Heaters

Some of the benefits of investing in a tankless water heater include:

  • Energy savings. Even though a tank-style unit is insulated, you're paying for the energy it takes to keep gallons of water hot and ready for use. This standby energy consumption is eliminated with a tankless model, which saves you money.
  • Longer service life. Tank-style heaters only have an expected lifespan of 10–13 years, while tankless units have an estimated service life of up to 20 years.
  • Greater convenience. Even if you have a large-capacity storage tank heater, you're bound to run out of hot water after a couple of showers and running the dishwasher. One large tankless unit can supply up to three showers simultaneoulsy, and since it keeps heating water as long as necessary, you'll have an almost endless supply without any waiting.
  • Space savings. Tankless models require very little space, and they can be placed where a tank-type simply won't fit. Depending on the size and type you choose and its venting and gas line requirements, a tankless unit can be wall-mounted in a utility room, garage, basement, closet or even in a bathroom.
  • Less risk of water damage. With a storage tank unit, there's always the danger of a devestating leak that sends 50 or more gallons of hot water flooding out into your home. You won't have this worry with a tankless model.

Tankless Water Heaters Have Only One Disadvantage

The only real drawback of tankless water heaters is that they can cost two–three times as much as storage tank units. Fortunately, this extra expense can be offset by the energy savings you'll reap over a much longer lifespan.
