This Indiana winter season, the air in your home likely is feeling dry as your heating system battles the freezing temperatures outdoors. That dry air does no favors for your health, but a whole-house humidifier can help combat the ill effects.
It puts tiny water droplets back into the air of your home that were removed by the warm air of your heating system. Health benefits include:
- Increased overall comfort. Dry air feels cooler than air with moisture. A whole-house humidifier will make your home feel more cozy and warm during the coldest weather. This allows you to turn down the thermostat a couple degrees, which will save on your heating bills.
- Hydrating dry skin. Winters in northern Indiana can mean dry, itchy skin and chapped lips. Adding moisture back into the air in your home can help to ease some of the chapping, cracking and discomfort of the dry skin of winter.
- Increased protection from viruses. PreventDisease.com reported on the discovery that viruses – such as influenza and colds – are able to spread much more easily in dry air. The water droplets in a sneeze or cough dissipate much more quickly, leaving the virus in the air. Furthermore, a low humidity level dries out the lining of the nasal passages, which allows viruses better access to your body.
- Help relieving symptoms if you do get sick. Adequate levels of humidity help to lessen the discomfort of a cold, flu or sore throat by keeping the membranes of your nose, eyes and throat hydrated. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a humidifier for those who are sick, and a whole-house humidifier means that all rooms of your home will reap the benefits.
A whole-house humidifier is integrated into the heating and cooling system in your home. Basically, you set it and forget it, and maintenance is only needed once or twice a year.
