Sleepless nights, interrupted conversations and angry neighbors ... what do all of these things have in common? They're all caused by that awful noise your air conditioner's making. Though you may have tried to ignore the racket, it's important that you find the underlying cause of the noise your air conditioner's making, both for your system's and your own good.
What does that sound mean?
- Boom! If you keep hearing loud banging, clanking, humming or explosive noises, your compressor is most likely the culprit. A failing A/C compressor is the most common cause of a noisy unit. If you suspect this is the problem, your trusted HVAC contractor should run a diagnostic test to confirm whether your compressor is failing. If so, your likely option will be to replace your system, especially if it's an older model. A newer A/C probably (and hopefully) is still under warranty. Though you were probably hoping to avoid this, a new air conditioner can be a worthwhile investment. On top of being far more energy-efficient than older models, new air conditioners are designed to run at half the noise level of the old systems. This is enabled through new soundproofing technologies such as compressor insulation, direct-drive fans and innovative vent design.
- Roaring and hissing sounds often signal air leaks in your ductwork. This can cause problems with excess moisture and reduce system efficiency, so you will want to work with a contractor to quickly locate and seal off any leaks.
- Bubbling and gurgling sounds may not be terribly annoying, but when this is the noise your air conditioner's making, you will want it checked out by a professional fast. This sound can mean that your refrigerant is leaking, which can greatly reduce home comfort and lead to system failure.
- Click! Tick! These irritating noises, along with annoying rattling, probably mean that your A/C's parts are loose or dirty. Routine preventive maintenance is your best defense against this problem, as your contractor will tighten all parts and clean your equipment with each visit.
