Keep Spring Allergies at Bay With These 9 Indoor Air Quality TipsIn all likelihood, you and everyone else in your Fort Wayne area home are breathing relatively dirty air, and you don't even know it. But don't panic -- getting control of your indoor air quality doesn't have to be difficult. Here are nine tips you should follow to clean your indoor air and start breathing easier:

  1. Micro-organisms ranging from viruses and bacteria to mold spores and mildew won't stand a chance against the installation of ultraviolet (UV) lights that break down their molecular structure, eliminating them.
  2. Investing in a multipurpose air purification system can help improve your indoor air quality by removing a variety of the smallest particulates.
  3. Now that the spring months are here and it's warmer outside, you might be tempted to leave your windows open all the time. A bit of fresh air is OK but remember that during allergy season, open windows are an open invitation to allergen invaders.
  4. Soaking your kitchen sponges in bleach for 15 minutes will kill the thousands of bacteria they've collected. Replacing them once a week will work, too.
  5. Dust mites are terrible for allergies, and they love to congregate on your bed. To put a stop to these invasive critters, wash your sheets, blankets and pillowcases in hot water each week.
  6. To improve your HVAC system's energy efficiency while reducing the number of airborne particles, clean or replace your air filter every month.
  7. If you're having trouble with mold, a whole-house dehumidifier will lower moisture in your home, which mold spores need in order to flourish.
  8. Start a "no shoes" policy at home. This will prevent allergens and other contaminants that you've collected outside from being spread around your home.
  9. Clean up clutter around your home, and reduce the number of dust-collecting knick-knacks.
