Your Aging Air Conditioner: 7 Smart Reasons to Go With Replacement Instead of RepairsSo, you have an aging air conditioner and you’re wondering which is best, to repair or replace? The first thing to do is consider the 50 percent rule. This rule states that if repair costs approach half the cost of a new A/C, it’s time to do away with the aging air conditioner and replace it with a new, energy-efficient model.

Even with less daunting repair costs on the horizon, it could still be worth replacing your aging air conditioner if it’s more than a decade old and has a history of problems. Consider these seven smart reasons to go with a replacement instead of repairs:

  • Convenience: Unexpected repairs are few and far between with a new system, especially if it’s from a trustworthy brand name. Then, even if a repair becomes necessary, contractors have parts for new air conditioners in stock so you can have your repair completed quickly.
  • Lower energy bills: High-efficiency air conditioners are able to deliver great comfort with lower energy consumption, which saves you money every month.
  • Environmentally friendly: Lower energy consumption means fewer greenhouse gases. In addition, new A/Cs run on R-410A refrigerant, an eco-friendlier alternative to outdated R-22 refrigerant, which is being phased out.
  • Improved comfort: A major reason to say goodbye to your aging air conditioner is if you had comfort problems last season. The advanced features seen with today’s air conditioners deliver more even temperatures, better humidity control, and constant A/C flow.
  • Better indoor air quality: Better humidity control and advanced fan settings mean discouraging mold growth and better air circulation, both of which lend themselves to cleaner indoor air.
  • Tax credits: When you purchase a qualifying central A/C or heat pump, you'll qualify for a $300 federal energy tax credit. This applies to systems purchased in 2012 and 2013.
  • New warranty: The warranty on your aging air conditioner ran out a long time ago. New systems today typically come with a five-year limited warranty.
