5 Simple Steps to Protect Your A/C Unit From TheftYou lock your home when you're away to protect your valuables and possessions from thieves, but how can you keep your A/C unit safe? There are many reasons why A/C theft is a growing problem across the country, but there are also methods to address the problem and protect your A/C unit from theft. Let's take a deeper look into it all.

A/C Theft: A Growing Problem

Many A/C units are sitting ducks for experienced and inexperienced thieves alike. Some common reasons A/C units are targeted include:

  • Copper - The price of copper is quite high, and A/C units are loaded with it. The condenser coil and tubing are typically manufactured of copper. Rooftop packaged A/Cs contain double the copper, including the evaporator coil.
  • Quick dismantling - Experienced A/C thieves can dismantle components in a few minutes with nothing but bolt cutters.
  • Location - A/C units are often located in inconspicuous areas, such as behind homes, which suits thieves just fine.
  • Lack of security - A/C theft is a relatively new trend. The vast majority of A/C units don't have dedicated anti-theft protection.
  • Easy cash - It's easy for thieves to get quick cash for copper at scrap yards.

Protect Your A/C Unit From Theft

Replacing an A/C unit is a substantial expense. Consider these anti-theft measures to lock-down your investment:

  • Lighting - Install motion-activated lighting at the A/C and around your home.
  • GPS tracking - A GPS tracking sensor installed on the A/C unit sends alerts to your smartphone if the unit is moved. You can immediately alert law enforcement and track its location.
  • Metal cage - Metal cages provide very good protection, sending a message to would-be thieves to move on.
  • Alarms - A/C alarms are available that activate when power is cut or refrigerant levels drop.
  • Security cameras - Wireless security cameras with motion-detection digital recording are good deterrents to thieves. Security camera software typically accommodates 16 cameras, allowing you to extend security cameras to cover your entire property later on.
