Energy-Saving Tips for the Fall or Year RoundWith modern energy rates being so high, everyone can use some energy-saving tips. They don't have to be anything difficult, just a few ways to drop your energy bill down a bit without working up a sweat. They will help save money this fall, as well as year round.

So here are some of the easiest yet effective energy-saving tips that won't break the bank, yet can leave a smile on your face every time you get your monthly energy bill.

  • Keep your furnace air flowing smoothly. Any airflow blockage or leaks in your HVAC system makes it work harder, and the harder it works, the more it will cost to run. Keep air flowing by checking and changing the air filter monthly, keeping vents and grilles clean, and making sure the ducts are all connected and properly sealed.
  • Open your south- and west-facing curtains during sunny days in the late fall and winter. If you let the sun do some of your heating, your furnace won't run as much and you'll save money on energy.
  • Seal air leaks and drafts. Pay particular attention to windows and areas around doors. Use a plastic film window-sealing kit, and install weatherstripping around doors to seal the cold out and the heat in.
  • Get a programmable thermostat. If you don't have one, there's no time like the present. By programming your HVAC system to heat your home to your comfort level only when it's occupied, you can save between 10 and 30 percent per month on your energy bill. With that type of savings, the thermostat will pay for itself in one heating season.
  • Check attic insulation. Make sure the insulation rises at least to the top of the floor joists.

Saving energy doesn't have to be difficult, and by using these energy-saving tips, not only will you lower your energy bill; you'll also have a little peace of mind knowing that you're helping save money instead of sending energy up your chimney and out cracks and holes in your home's exterior and ductwork.
