There are many factors to weigh when shopping for a new heating system. The energy source, for one, must be available. Additionally, system size and heat output should adequately meet, but not exceed your home’s load. Heat Pump or Furnace?
Air-source heat pumps use electricity to extract and move heat from air outside your home to the evaporator coil. A blower instigates heat exchange, and the heated airflow is forced through supply ducts to your living space. This heating system is very efficient.
Heat pumps, however, are only efficient to the balance point, which is around 32 to 40 degrees, depending on the model. When outside temperatures dip below the balance point, backup auxiliary heating engages (think giant toaster), which is very inefficient.
Gas furnaces are used in more homes than any other type of HVAC system. Furnaces deliver ample heating to homes in regions with extremely cold winters. Gas is also readily available in our Fort Wayne area. So, availability generally is not an issue. A homeowner that doesn't have gas lines running to their home may opt for a propane-fired furnace.
Best of Both Systems
Heat pumps offer a few advantages furnaces can't deliver. Heat pumps can also cool your home. Moreover, when fitted with a desuperheater, heat pumps can supply your home with hot water. A furnace will need to have an A/C system attached to provide home cooling.
For the best of both systems and energy sources, consider a dual-fuel heating system. This type of heating system utilizes the efficiency of a heat pump to the balance point. Then, the powerful furnace engages to continue delivering efficient home heating.
