When it comes to heating and cooling a home, proper efficiency and comfort are two major goals. One easy but effective upgrade that you can install to improve both of these factors in your home is a thermostat with WiFi connectivity, otherwise known as a WiFi thermostat.
What Are WiFi Thermostats?
WiFi thermostats are different from ordinary programmable thermostats in that, as the name suggests, they have the ability to connect with the Internet. This greatly improves your ability to manage your home climate while saving you money.
The most common use of the wifi feature is to communicate data from your home to the Internet, and for you to control your thermostat from a computer, tablet or smartphone. Most other benefits build off of this capability.
Why Get a WiFi Thermostat
As with conventional programmable thermostats, you can schedule your thermostat to change its settings ahead of time so you don’t waste energy unnecessarily heating or cooling when nobody's home or everybody's asleep. Additionally, you can change your settings from your computer or phone if you’ve already left your home and forgot to do it in advance.
Another improved feature is the use of programs to improve home energy efficiency. Some WiFi thermostats continually get software updates, which allow them to continually improve upon climate control.
Finally, one of the most unique features with some WiFi thermostats is the ability to place sensors throughout or outside your home. These sensors monitor temperature data and relay it through your thermostat to be analyzed. You can track the data online and use it to monitor results, enabling tweaks and changes to your thermostat settings.
While they have a lot of great features, not all WiFi thermostats are created equally. Consult with an HVAC professional to try and find one that is easy to use and a high-quality product.
