During humid and hot Indiana summers, you'll want to get the most out of your air conditioning system. However, the configuration of your home might make this difficult, particularly if you have large windows, multiple floors or room additions. Often, the area immediately around the thermostat will be at a comfortable temperature, while the rest of the house might be uncomfortably hot or cold. The best way to address this common problem is to install a zoning system.
The need for a zoning system
In many homes, a single thermostat controls the air-conditioning system. As a result, it can be impossible to achieve a uniform temperature throughout the entire home. In part, this is because heat rises within a home to the highest point it can reach. In addition, the layout and design of a home can cause certain areas – for instance, rooms with large west- and south-facing windows – to get much hotter than others.
Primary zoning system features
A zoning system calls for two or more thermostats situated throughout the home, with each controlling its own particular zone. When one or more of the zones need conditioned air, a signal is sent to a controller that operates motorized dampers to close off the areas that do not need conditioned air. This way, only those areas requesting conditioned air are cooled.
Additional features
In addition to the cost savings homeowners receive from more efficiently cooling and heating their homes using a zoning system, there are other benefits as well. For one thing, different zones can have different temperatures to accommodate family members' preferences, or the heating or cooling can be turned down or off in unoccupied rooms, saving on energy.
When you install a zoning system, you're taking an active step in taking control of your cooling bills. At the same time, you're improving the comfort level of your home for yourself and your family.
