The sweltering months of summer are here, bringing with them searing temperatures and high humidity. If your air conditioning system fails, you are faced with a tough decision made harder by the uncomfortable conditions. Should you repair your existing unit, or opt for total replacement? Several factors can help you determine which route to take and restore the comfort levels in your home.
- How old is your existing unit? Advances in air conditioning technology have vastly improved their performance in recent years. If your unit is over 10 years old, you should consider replacement versus spending hundreds or thousands of dollars repairing a sinking ship. With the phasing out of R-22 refrigerant to a type that is more environment friendly, sooner rather than later repairing your old unit will become prohibitively expensive.
- Have you noticed a spike in your energy bills when using your A/C as compared to previous years? Older air conditioning systems are far less efficient and require more energy to maintain your desired comfort levels than newer models. For example, an 8 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) unit consumes approximately 47 percent more energy than a 15 SEER unit. As your air conditioner ages, parts become worn, forcing the system to work harder to condition the air inside your home, which also increases energy costs.
- Have you noticed higher humidity levels inside of your home when your system is operating? If your air conditioner is malfunctioning or is oversized for your home, you may experience an increase of humidity levels. Clogged drain lines, pans and leaking ductwork can also lead to increased humidity.
Consulting with a certified air conditioner technician can help you determine the best course of action for your system. Delaying action will not only waste money in higher energy costs, but could also leave you without air conditioning during the hottest part of summer.
