Geothermal Benefits, Beyond Mere SavingsA geothermal heat pump system should be one of your choices if you're building a new home or replacing a worn-out heating and cooling system. The cost of installing a geothermal heat pump can exceed installing conventional heating and cooling systems but a geothermal system will begin paying you back immediately. A geothermal heat pump is the only heating/cooling method that can pay back on your investment in under 10 years. It has a number of other benefits, as well.

Using an underground loop system containing a water/anti-freeze mix, geothermal systems deposit warmth from your house into the ground in the summer, and draw heat from underground into the house in the winter. Size of yard and type of soil are the main factors in selecting the best system option for your home. Geothermal benefits are more than just cost savings during the life of the system and include reliability, a better living environment, green technology, and longer system life span.

  • Reliability: flexible systems can serve commercial and residential, large or small, new or older homes. The inside component of the heat pump and its buried tubing are not subjected to wear and tear from outdoor exposure to the elements or other damage. System maintenance requirements are less than other heating/cooling methods.
  • Better living environment: provides even temperatures and ability for zoning within the home. It's a safe system because there is no combustion and no associated carbon monoxide emissions. Adding a high-efficiency air filter can provide high indoor air quality. The system operates as quietly as a newer refrigerator.
  • Green technology: geothermal systems use less electricity with output up to five times greater than other heating/cooling methods. There are no greenhouse gas emissions to outside air. Antifreeze is commonly added to the circulating water to prevent freezing of tubing in the winter but it's never above ground.
  • Longer life span: plastic system tubing is durable and may be guaranteed up to 50 years. The heat pump unit may last 20 or more years, twice that for furnaces.
