Duct Sizing: An Important Step To Ensuring A High-Quality HVAC InstallationWhen installing a new HVAC system, you must consider more than just the specifications of the equipment itself. The layout of your home, zone systems and duct sizing are also important factors to bear in mind. If your ductwork is too small to accommodate your new equipment, it will operate inefficiently and potentially increase your heating and cooling bills. On the other hand, if your ducts are too large, the rooms in your home may not be as comfortable as you desire.

Work with your contractor to ensure that the following factors are taken into consideration during your new HVAC installation:

  • Load analysis. Before you purchase a new HVAC system, your contractor should perform a heating and cooling load calculation. This will include many metrics such as the size of your home, your local climate, the layout of your house, location of windows and doors, air filtration rates, and more.
  • Duct size and type. Depending on your heating and cooling strategy, you may need specific types of ductwork. For example, a zoned system requires materials that can accommodate dampers without air leaks, which will lead to inefficiency.
  • Noise. Proper duct sizing and installation can help reduce noises coming from the ductwork. Home comfort is about more than just the temperature in a room.
  • Smart duct design. You don't need as much heated or cooled air pumped into your bathroom as you do into the living room. Smart duct sizing and layout can ensure that all of the rooms in your home are comfortable without increasing energy usage.

If new duct installation is included as part of your HVAC upgrade, confirm that the contractor is using the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Manual D method for duct sizing. A new HVAC system is a big investment; make sure you get the most from it with proper duct sizing.
