Springtime is the ideal time of year to perform system maintenance and efficiency tasks around the home. Prepare your home for the cooling months with ductless mini split maintenance, and you can relax in comfort with lower cooling bills.
Ductless mini split performance
Ductless mini splits offer homeowners a plethora of options for cooling and heating remodeled spaces, room additions, and existing rooms and areas that need additional air conditioning or specific temperatures. The compact components afford versatile installation and energy-efficiency benefits which, for many situations, forced-air systems simply can’t deliver.
The outside compressor/condenser connects to indoor air handlers via a thin conduit to deliver cooling and heating directly in the desired vicinity or room. Each air handler (up to four) provides individual temperature control in the area where it's installed, providing a zoning system for greater comfort and lower energy bills.
To maintain peak performance, or if you’re considering a mini split for your home project, make sure that you perform the following ductless mini split maintenance tips before the height of the cooling and heating months:
- Wash dirty filters with mild soap, and completely dry the filters before reinstalling.
- Check the evaporator for ice and debris. If you notice ice accumulation (poor cooling is a sign), turn the system off before damage occurs, and call your HVAC professional. If you see debris, use a vacuum-brush extension to gently clean the coils.
- If you notice mold growth on the evaporator, or smell musty odors from the air handler, the evaporator and drainage system will need to be deep-cleaned by your HVAC pro, and chemically treated to prevent future contamination.
- View the area surrounding the outside unit. Make sure there are no obstructions to free airflow. Obstructions may include things as simple as leaves, grass clippings and hedges. During the heating months, snow and ice should be swept off of the cabinet and cleared away in five feet in all directions.
