New Home Addition? Try a Ductless System | Hartman Bros. When your home was built, odds are that a lot of careful through went into the ductwork design. A central HVAC system needs to carefully regulate the pressure in the ducts to deliver the right amount of air to every part of your home. If you're adding onto your home, amending this careful balancing can become a challenge — but you don't want to exclude your new addition from your heating and cooling considerations. In this case, a ductless system may be the answer.

Ductless systems don't push air out to many rooms at once. Instead, individual units circulate air through a single room or area. This in itself is a big benefit from you: air which passes through ductwork may lose or gain heat as it travels, and may also be subject to losses through ductwork air leaks. In fact, many homes lose as much as 30 percent of their energy spending to duct inefficiencies. A ductless mini split sidesteps this issue entirely.

Having one interior ductless unit for each separate room or area also allows for much more flexibility in controlling your indoor temperature. If your addition will be used on a different schedule than the rest of your home — for example, it's a home office which will be used during the day, while the living ares of your home will be used more in the evenings — or if the people using the addition are more comfortable at a different temperature, a ductless system can easily accommodate these needs.

Ductless mini-splits are heat pumps, meaning that they use a single unit to provide both heating and cooling. Heat pumps are also significantly more efficient than traditional oil or gas furnaces. All in all, they can make an economical choice for a new addition to a home.
