For some consumers, the differences will be negligible; for others, they'll be the feature that seals the deal.

- Ecobee is a name that has emerged prominently among smart thermostats. Take the ecobee3 Lite, the entry-level model. An app monitors and changes settings remotely, and you can connect to a number of smart home appliances. It does not have a temperature and proximity sensor, but you can add sensors.
- With a built-in Alexa speaker and a top award for design and performance, the ecobee4 is Wi-Fi- and app-enabled, with built-in temperature and proximity sensors. Its learning features include canceling an away mode if motion and proximity sensors notice you're home unexpectedly.
- The Emerson Sensi has a traditional design but integrates via an app with Alexa voice assistant, Google Assistant, Wink, and Apple HomeKit. It lacks advanced features (temperature sensors and algorithmic learning), but it's a good bet for solid, smart functionality at a good price.
- The Nest Learning Thermostat wasn't the first smart thermostat, but its unique design still makes it a major player. With a retro-looking thermostat, it has up-to-date appeal and a learning algorithm that adapts to your movements as needed. It also sends energy reports so you can operate your system with greater efficiency.
- For the budget conscious, the Google Nest E offers most of the Nest's learning features, but the plastic hardware keeps the price down.
