Troubleshooting Tips for Your Home's Electric FurnaceIf the electric furnace in your Fort Wayne home is on the fritz, there are a few things you can try before calling a professional for help. To troubleshoot your electric furnace, just start with the least complex system. Don't get overwhelmed, and remember that help from your local HVAC expert is just a phone call away.

  • First, check your thermostat. Has it been accidentally reset? If it's battery-powered, are the batteries still good? If you turn the temperature up five or 10 degrees, does the furnace engage? If your thermostat sensor is in a cooler part of your home, it may simply have reached its set point and turned off your furnace before warming the rest of your home.
  • Next identify the circuit breaker and fuse box, which control the power to your central HVAC system. Ensure that no circuits have tripped, and no fuses have blown.
  • If your furnace's air filter hasn't been replaced recently, replace it now. A clogged filter will provide a noticeable drag on your air circulation. Clogged filters are the number one cause of HVAC system failure.
  • Check your furnace's fan. Ensure that it's set to "on" or "auto" on the thermostat. If it's set to "auto," temporarily turn it "on" to make sure the fan engages. If not, you may have to call for repair.
  • Finally, turn off the furnace at its service panel, and open the casing. Use a vacuum to remove any dust from inside the unit.

If you've followed these steps and your electric furnace still isn't working, it may be time to call for professional help.
