Holiday Energy Savings: Plan Now and Don't Blow the BudgetWith so much money spent on gifts each year, it would be nice to save a little extra. There are innumerable ways to save money on energy costs this holiday season, but four tips in particular may be your route to holiday energy savings for years to come.

Use LED Lights

LED lights are much more efficient than traditional Christmas lights so before you dig out last year's tangled mess of wires and bulbs, consider purchasing a new set. LED lights are inexpensive and will last much longer than old-fashioned Christmas lights.

Let the Christmas Tree Light up the Room

A well-decorated tree covered in lights should provide sufficient lighting for your living room. Turning off lights when they're not in use will generate more holiday energy savings. Keeping the lights turned off in unused rooms will also help your holiday decorations stand out to family, friends and neighbors.

Decorate with Candles

Candles are a great way to accentuate the holiday decor in your home and can reduce the energy bill. The glow of the candles are perfect for getting in the holiday spirit on Christmas eve. But remember, if you use candles, they should always be monitored. An unmonitored candle is a fire hazard.

Purchase a Battery Charger

Since so many gifts received during Christmas rely on batteries to operate, purchase a battery recharger. A tremendous amount of money can go to batteries for new toys or other gifts, so instead of buying a ton of new batteries that likely will be depleted in a week or two, buy a battery charger and save.

Buy Energy Star Appliances

Whether they're for gifts, or to help prepare a holiday meal, Energy Star certified appliances will consume less electricity and save you money over time while providing solid performance.
