When you install a natural gas or propane garage heater in your garage, you can enjoy warm temperatures all winter, whether you use the space for a workroom or just want to keep your vehicles and garage contents just a bit warmer. Today's heaters are safe and energy efficient, and heating your garage gives you more space that's livable. The advantage that natural gas or propane offers is that they're both relatively clean fuels.

These heaters are available as vented or ventless systems. The former uses a wall or ceiling vent that sends the exhaust gases outside. The latter uses highly efficient combustion to burn the fuel and contains an oxygen depletion sensor that measures the amount of oxygen in the air. When it falls too low, the heater shuts off. You can also leave a door or window open a bit to let fresh air into the space without driving up the heating costs too much.

Either kind can sit on the floor or hang from a wall, an installation style that gives you more working space. The heaters need to be installed by an HVAC contractor since both types use combustible fuels.

The manufacturer may also require that the gas or propane garage heater be installed by a licensed professional to keep the warranty valid and that you perform the required maintenance to keep the equipment working properly, something the HVAC contractor will explain at installation.

If you plan on doing woodwork in the garage, turning the heater off when you're sanding or otherwise creating a lot of dust will keep you safer. When you're using flammable materials in the garage, preheat the space and then turn the heater off until the fumes dissipate. Installing insulation in the attic of the garage, if it has one, will lower your heating costs and retain the heat in the garage longer when you need to turn off the heater for safety.
