Renovating Your Home This Fall? Have an HVAC System PlanThe heating and cooling equipment in your Fort Wayne area home can be seriously damaged by dirt and dust. You can trace many repair issues with HVAC systems back to these culprits. If you know anyone who has ever been through a home remodeling project, they can tell you how dusty a remodel can get. Take the following precautions to make sure that you don't end up with expensive repairs after your remodeling project is complete.

  • Talk to your HVAC contractor about a protective HVAC system plan before committing to a remodel project, one that will protect your equipment from excess dust and dirt.
  • Avoid running your air conditioner or furnace as much as you can while dusty work is taking place.
  • Your registers should be closed off and covered in any area where work is being done. This will keep dirt and dust from being pulled back in your HVAC system. However, make sure you're not closing off too many of your registers at once. If you are worried that you are closing off too many vents, consult your HVAC contractor for input.
  • Cutting and sanding work should be done outside or in your garage to minimize sawdust and other debris inside your home.
  • Your contractor should be using plastic tarps to isolate any construction areas from the rest of your home. The building contractor should use proper dust control during the project in accordance with your HVAC system plan.
  • Clean all work areas frequently during the project to keep dust from being tracked through your home. Do not allow dust to be swept into your vents.
  • Clean or change your HVAC filter during your remodel, and change it when the project is complete. A clogged filter will force your HVAC equipment to work harder to compensate, and will spread dust and dirt through your ductwork.
