An Indoor Air Quality Test Can Tell You a Lot About Your HomeMany people would be surprised at the impact that indoor air quality has on a home, and by extension all the people in it.  If you have any reason to suspect that your home's breathing air is not what it should be, an indoor air quality test will confirm or disprove the notion for you, so you'll know if it needs attention.

How an Indoor Air Quality Test Can Help

Studies conducted on office work places have shown a clear rise in employee productivity as indoor air quality is improved. Employees simply feel more like being productive when air is improved by the removal of offensive odors, triggers for asthma or allergy attacks, and pollutants that interfere with respiratory efficiency. This same principle is true in a household setting – remove the bad air, and family members will feel more active and healthy.

Sometimes poor ventilation and air circulation can promote the growth of mold and mildew in the home, because damp and darker spaces within are bypassed by airflow. These spaces can also be a haven for bad smells that permeate the entire house, and can be triggers for headaches. One frequent culprit for mold and mildew is the basement, where circulation isn't as good and damp and dark areas are more common.

Home values can be affected by problems with indoor air quality, too. While a prospective buyer might not notice some air quality issues on a visit, he or she will easily detect a persistent odor problem due to mold growth or poor ventilation. If such an issue is not detected and dealt with, it can have a very negative impact on both house and family members. For your family's benefit as well as your home's, you should consider scheduling an indoor air quality test.

A variety of air quality tests are available, some you can do yourself (mold and radon testing kits) and then send to a laboratory, and some your HVAC contractor can perform for you.
