Maintenance Tips to Make Sure that Your Heat Pump is Working CorrectlyAn inefficient heat pump can greatly affect how much you pay for your heating and cooling costs. Taking the time to make sure that your heat pump is working as well as possible can not only save you money on heating and cooling costs, it can extend the life of the heat pump. Below are a few valuable tips to help you keep your heat pump working as efficiently as possible.

Regulate the Temperature

You want to be sure that the temperature stays as consistent as possible. Installing a programmable thermostat will ensure that you are able to regulate the temperature efficiently, only heating or cooling your home to a comfortable level when you're actually there to enjoy it. For the heat pump, however, the right type of thermostat will adjust temperatures gradually during the heating season, to avoid kicking on the emergency heating.

Keep the Filters Clean

The air filter in the heat pump will need to be cleaned or replaced regularly. The more dirt that collects on the filter, the harder your heat pump system has to work. Get in the habit of inspecting the air filter monthly, and changing or cleaning it (for reusable types) when it looks dirty.

Clean the Indoor and Outdoor Coils

When the coils become caked with grime, the heat pump's essential heat-exchange capabilities are degraded, and your heat pump system will have a difficult time achieving a comfortable temperature. Mold and bacteria on the indoor coil also can lower indoor air quality (IAQ). Your HVAC technician can do this job for you during the recommended preseason maintenance visit.

Blower Blades Need Cleaning, Too

Keeping the blower blades free of dirt and debris is essential. Before the change of seasons, take a soft, bristled cleaning brush and gently scrub dirt off the blades. The leftover dirt and dust can be vacuumed away after the scrubbing is complete.
