They could have slapped a generic part on, but it would have only been a short-term fix. Instead of taking the easy way out, they are getting the part made for my unit so it will stay fixed, and they are coming back to finish the job as soon as they have the part. Under normal conditions, you shouldn't have to add refrigerant to your HVAC system. The refrigerant doesn't get consumed – it travels in a loop through the system, absorbing heat at the indoor evaporator coil, and releasing it at the condenser coil into the outdoor air. When there's an HVAC leak, you may be able to detect it by these telltale signs:
