Lowering Your Heating And Cooling Load: A Landscaping StrategyReducing your home's heating and cooling load can be a homegrown strategy. The terms refer to the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable interior temperature.  In winter, that’s the heating load, and in the summer it's the cooling load. A house with too much of either is energy inefficient and costing you money. Methods to reduce the load on your home include weatherizing, adding insulation and sealing ducts. But a natural “green” option exists, too. Energy-saving landscaping positions trees to lower the heating and cooling load by blocking solar heat in summer while still allowing the sun to warm the house in winter. "I signed up for a service plan, as I’m not much of a handyman myself. They had a variety of payment options with the service plan, so I was able to start monthly payments, which works best for me. Our service person was polite, and he explained everything in terms I had no problems understanding. I had an additional issue with an attic duct being chewed through. He got up there and got pictures right away so they could put together an estimate. Same visit, no hassle. And because of the service plan, there was no charge for the system check. I just let him in, showed him around, and he worked his magic. No regrets here. There’s a very good chance I’ll just keep up this service plan for the entire time I own my home."
