Increasing the amount of insulation in your attic or walls will lower your heating and cooling billsand is the least expensive way to save energy for decades to come. The two most common insulation products used in retrofit situations are fiberglass and cellulose. Fiberglass is made from silicone, while cellulose is made from recycled paper. They share some characteristics, but differ in others that may make a difference in the type you choose.

Because the winters in Indiana can be brutal, when your furnace has quit working, you want it up and running again as soon as possible. Therefore, before calling a service technician, you may want to try to troubleshoot the problem yourself. This is especially wise since the majority of heating system failures occur due to thermostat malfunctions, blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers.

If you're in the market for a new furnace, you definitely should be considering the superior energy efficiency and performance you'll get with a condensing furnace. The percentage of furnace fuel converted to heat is expressed as AFUE, or annual fuel utilization efficiency, and the condensing furnace delivers the highest AFUE ratings available today.

When you're in the market for a new HVAC system, look for one that has an electronically commutated motor (ECM) outfitted for variable speeds as part of the furnace or air conditioner. These motors offer significant advantages over permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors because they use less electricity, run more quietly and adapt their speeds to conditions in your home. Also known as a variable-speed blower motor, an ECM with a motor controller can operate at whatever speed is needed to meet the conditioning needs of your home and the specific airflow and filtering factors in your HVAC system. For example, if your air filter is dirty, a variable-speed ECM will ramp up its speed to compensate for the restricted airflow.

When Ice Dams Get In The Way, Expect Significant Repair CostsIce dams prevent your roof from draining properly. Water leaks, mold problems and structural damage can all result, and repair costs can be high. An ice dam occurs when warm air in your attic radiates upward, melting snow on the roof. When the resulting water reaches the bottom of the roof, which is much colder because of less heat in the thin section of underlying attic, it refreezes, resulting in a dam that forces additional melted snow to pool up behind it. That standing water eventually finds its way down into your attic and living spaces.

7 Benefits Geothermal Heating And Cooling Systems OfferIf you aren’t thinking about geothermal heating and cooling for your Fort Wayne area home, you should consider it. A geothermal heat pump system extracts heat from a few feet underground to heat your home in the winter, and deposits heat from your home back into the ground for cooling in the summer. The air filter for your HVAC equipment is one of the most important components of the system. It keeps the blower components clean and affects the quality of the air you breathe indoors. Just as different types of HVAC equipment carry ratings for efficiency, so do air filters, and knowing about the options can lengthen your system's life and improve indoor air quality.

If you're in need of a new heating system for your Northeast Indiana home, consider a hybrid heat dual fuel system. These combine the efficiency advantages of heat pumps with supplemental heat from a combustible fuel, typically natural gas. Air-source heat pumps typically work well until temperatures fall below freezing, when it's harder for them to harvest the heat from the outside air.

New Furnace Efficiency Standards In 2013 Will Affect IndianansThe new furnace efficiency standards set for 2013 will require more efficient furnaces to be installed in new construction and when existing furnaces are replaced. The requirements vary based on home region, with stricter efficiency standards for heaters in colder climates and stricter efficiency standards for air conditioning in warmer climates. Indianans will see changes to efficiency requirements for heaters, while air conditioning efficiency will remain at current levels.

Burning Furnace Odor? Analyze The SourceWinter in Northeast Indiana can be long and cold, requiring the furnace to run 24/7. If your furnace has been properly maintained, chances are it will make it through the heating season with no trouble, but older furnaces and those that haven't had an annual tune-up for some time may show signs of needing some TLC. A burning furnace odor is one of these signs. While most burning odors are a result of dust burning off inside your system, any smell coming from your furnace should be checked. These tips will help you troubleshoot the burning smell.

"We reached out to Hartman Brothers as our previous place was actually rude and acted like didnt care as we had an issue with the AC. Our systems at that point were about 14 years old. We got a quote from previous place and i about fell off my chair. Called Hartman Brothers and asked if they could provide a quote for us on both and in AC alone. Super impressed as Rick came out next morning. Looked at what we currently had and that same day had a complete quote to us. We were scheduled for May 26 install however they had a cancellation and came out May 17. Both techs were super amazing. Talked with us with everything and answered all of our questions. They came out a little before 8am and everything was installed and working by 2pm. Cleaned up their stuff ( which was great as we have 3 dogs). Never have we experienced this type of professionalism from any company. We are all so pleased with Hartman Brothers including Vicki in the office. She was great helping me and explaining the maintenance agreement. If you ever need a great team you wont be disappointed with Hartman Brothers ! We thank you all for helping us and doing a great job. It was also great we kept it local as well. Glad to be a part of the Hartman Brothers family now ! Thank you again."

"I signed up for a service plan, as I’m not much of a handyman myself. They had a variety of payment options with the service plan, so I was able to start monthly payments, which works best for me. Our service person was polite, and he explained everything in terms I had no problems understanding. I had an additional issue with an attic duct being chewed through. He got up there and got pictures right away so they could put together an estimate. Same visit, no hassle. And because of the service plan, there was no charge for the system check. I just let him in, showed him around, and he worked his magic. No regrets here. There’s a very good chance I’ll just keep up this service plan for the entire time I own my home."
